ABOUT SAKURA CHORUS

私たちは、歌うことで人と繋がっていく喜びを楽しみとし、一人一人の生き方を尊重し、お互いに助け合い学びあって成長していく仲間です。規則を中心にするのではなく、自発的な意志で最善を目指します。

加入の条件は、ソプラノ、メゾ、アルトのそれぞれのメロディーを音の高さやリズムを守って歌え、ある程度楽譜の読譜ができて指揮者の指示がわかること、一つの声として一緒に歌を仕上げていく合唱の目標を理解してくださることなどです。

調和のある人間関係が私たちの理想です。日本の歌を歌いながら故郷を思い、練習後のお茶の時間や年二回の新年会、打ち上げパーティーなどで親睦を深めます。

メンバーの幅広い年齢構成は、アメリカ暮らしでの知恵や情報の宝庫となっており、日本文化との暖かなつながりにもなっています。コロナ禍の間は、ズーム練習を行いました。

通常は隔年春にコンサート開催を目指しています。できない場合には、仕上げた歌のビデオ撮りをします。また、練習場所を提供して下さるパークビュー教会の礼拝で年に4回歌います。

練習は月二回で第一、第三日曜日午前11時45分より午後1時半までです。長期間の欠席の場合は、練習日の考慮をお願いしますが、個人的なご事情も考慮に入れます。6月から8月の夏休み期間と12月は練習はありません。

It is our pleasure to feel a connection among singers and a connection with our audience through our singing. We value the individual differences within our group, yet strive to support each other and aim for our growth. We do not have set rules, but our individual goodwill and courtesy are the foundations of our singing community.

Musical criteria for joining our group are: to sing with the ability to carry proper melodies and rhythms for soprano, mezzo soprano or alto and the ability to understand the written scores to a certain extent in order to comprehend the directions of the conductor, and share the joy of choral music.

As a group, we also put importance on a harmonious group interaction: singing songs in Japanese and tea time after practice and other gatherings (New year and Mid-year) will enhance the warm and friendly atmosphere.

The mixture of generations of the singers has been creating valuable resources as we live our lives in the US. It also brings the warm connection with the Japanese culture. During the pandemic, we continued to practice using zoom.

We hold a concert every other year under a normal circumstance. During the period when it is not possible, we will aim at creating video streams of our songs. We sing in the worship service for Parkview Presbyterian Church in appreciation for their support.

Attendance for the practice, twice a month (1st and 3rd Sundays, 11:45-1:30), is essential. Extended absences are encouraged to be planned honoring our practice dates. Individual conditions can be considered. There is no practice in June, July, August and December.

榊原晴子

東京都目黒区出身。恵泉女学園高校で英語教諭。1980年に日系アメリカ人と結婚して渡米後サクラメントに在住。外国人のための英語と日本語教育を専門としていたが、その間音楽も趣味として大切にして来た。

幼少期にコダーイメソッドで音感教育を受け、ピアノを習ってから、ブラスバンド、合唱、ジャズバンドなど学校での音楽活動を楽しんだ。渡米後、長年教会での奏楽や聖歌隊の伴奏を続けている。1988年から2004年まで、松本才能研究会のピアノ•ベイシックス奏法の創始者、故片岡ハルコ先生のアメリカ各地（シカゴ、アトランタ、ソルトレイクシティー、ロスアンジェス、サクラメントなど）での夏の研修会で専属通訳者。その間、たくさんのピアノ演奏と音楽の解釈の講義からつぶさに学ぶ機会を得て、その経験がその後のピアノ演奏や現在の合唱指導にも大変役立っている。

1990年代にサクラメントシンフォニーの理事をしていた時には、クラシック音楽を地域のより広い層に広める目的で、アジア系の音楽をテーマにしたコンサートの開催に尽力し、演奏会の企画や地域との連携の方法を学んだ。

声楽は、デービス市、故レイチェル•ケスラー氏に個人レッスンを受ける。後、2010年にサクラメントマスターシンガーズに入り、現在もコンサート活動を続けている。シンガーとしての体験は歌う側に立つと同時に、指揮者の役割や指揮法を学ぶ場ともなっている。

「歌があるから」「シベリアの歌」「なぜ家を出るの」など、自作の合唱作品もある。さくらコーラスの歌の選曲は、日本の懐かしい歌だけでなく、新しい歌、歌い手や聞き手に意味のある歌、などを心がけている。

Haruko Sakakibara was born in Meguro, Tokyo. After teaching English at Keisen Girls’ Christian high school, she married a Japanese American and moved to Sacramento, California. In the US, she taught English as a second language and then Japanese for many years. During that time, she also cherished various music activities.

She received auditory training in Kodaly method in her childhood, took piano lessons, and enjoyed school activities such as brass band, choral music, and jazz band. Since 1980, she has been a church pianist and accompanist for choirs.

Between 1988 and 2004, she served as a primary interpreter for the summer workshops conducted by the late Dr. Haruko Kataoka, the founder of the Suzuki Method Piano Basics, originated in Talent Education in Matsumoto, Japan. The workshops were held in various cities in the US such as Chicago, Atlanta, Salt Lake City and Sacramento. They were great opportunities for her to watch many piano performances and interpret Dr. Kataoka’s lectures of how to instruct music. Such experiences gave her valuable knowledge for her own piano performances and for directing a choral group.

While she was on the board of directors for the Sacramento Symphony in 1990’s, she strived to establish classic concerts of Asian theme in order to increase the music lovers in the area. This experience taught her methods of concert planning and how to connect with the region to receive support.

After taking voice lessons from late Mrs. Rachel Kesler in Davis, she auditioned with the Sacramento Master Singers in 2010. Since then, she has been singing in the alto section. This gives her an understanding of the role of a singer and director in a chorus setting.

She also has written and composed choral music such as “Because There is a Song,” Song of Siberia,” and “We Had to Go. When selecting songs for the Sakura Chorus, she considers not only fond memories from Japan, but modern songs, and meaningful songs for singers and the audience.
